Thanksgiving calls to mind the American foundational myth of the Puritan separatists seeking religious freedom, and celebrating with a fall feast with the native Wampanoag people. While there is some historical accuracy in the story, it obscures the ugly truths of the erasure and genocide of the native peoples of our country. Additionally, American culture makes wide-ranging myths about Native American culture and history that have misinformed generations. In our free and responsible search for truth and meaning, inquiring into our collective mythmaking can be a powerful influence on our understanding of the present—and our future.
