Chicago Children’s Choir 66th Birthday – Sunday, October 16

Enjoy the Musical Magic at Sunday’s Service!

The Chicago Children’s Choir was founded in 1956 – 66 years ago! – right here in the First U Sanctuary. At the time, forging an interracial choir of children was unheard of.  Our sanctuary was a shelter from the storms of racism in the broader city; when the children started to perform offsite, at times they were subject to racist, hateful speech. But our sanctuary was more than a shelter from the outside world. Our sanctuary was a shelter for the outside world—to send the children of the city to teach Chicago a new song.

Today, the choir serves over 2000 students in every residential zip code of Chicago, through 74 school programs and 8 neighborhood choirs, including a musical ambassador tour of Egypt in June.  To reflect this greatly expanded vision, on October 1 the choir officially announced a new name:  Uniting Voices Chicago.

Enjoy their inspirational songs and happy faces, here again in the First U sanctuary where it all started, with a special annual birthday concert on Sunday October 16.  Following the service, join us for snacks and birthday cake!
